What is dandruff?
Dandruff is a skin condition that is caused by dead skin cells in the scalp that make it to easily flake on one’s face or shoulders. It affects almost everyone regardless of age and sex. It is also quite infectious making dermatologists to advise people to avoid sharing combs, towels and hair brushes.
Causes of dandruff
This condition is caused by the skin getting too dry, unhygienic hair conditions, a fungus called Malassezia, synthetic shampoo especially those with ammonium lauryl sulfate and excessive secretion of oil by oil glands in the scalp.
Symptoms of dandruff
Some of the symptoms of dandruff include; the formation of white flakes on the scalp and the scalp getting dry, itchy as well as experiencing massive scaling.
Home remedies for dandruff
There are many ways of controlling dandruffs and these include; exercising healthy hair care and using some of the natural remedies. Although some of the home remedies may take longer to show desired results, they are effective treatment for dandruff.
Here are some of the home remedies for treating dandruff:
1. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera contains antifungal and antibacterial properties that are quite useful in controlling and getting rid of dandruff. It is therefore advisable that you take fresh aloe vera juice or apply aloe vera gel on your hair before taking a bath. Aloe vera gel hair application goes hand in hand with washing your head with a mild shampoo. This exercise when repeated for some time helps in controlling as well as warding of dandruff.
Lemon has some acids that help a great deal in getting rid of yeast that causes dandruff. Treating dandruff using lemon involves you taking fresh lemon juice and massaging your scalp with it. You then leave it for some minutes before shampooing your hair and finishing the process by using a conditioner. This process when repeated daily leads to complete dandruff disappearance.
You can as well mix lemon juice and coconut oil in the ratio of 1:5 and apply the mixture on your hair. After this process wrap your hair using a towel, leave it for a whole night and wash it in the morning.
The antiseptic as well as anti fungal properties of thyme are very useful in dandruff treatment. Thus to achieve this goal you need to add four tablespoons of thyme to two cups of water before placing them in water to boil for more than ten minutes. Filter the mixture and leave it for some time to cool. After which you will use the solution that forms to massage your scalp repeatedly before leaving it unwashed for up to three hours to make it dandruff free.
4. White vinegar
White vinegar contains acetic acid as an ingredient and therefore if it is applied on your head dandruff will completely disappear. You are advised to take a part of white vinegar and mix it with water before using it to wash your hair. You will however have to rinse your hair with normal water. Alternatively, just like lemon you can as well apply white vinegar to your hair directly and keep it wrapped for a whole night. When morning comes you will have to clean your hair with shampoo. This process puts a condition to your scalp that is not suitable for fungus and bacteria to grow.
