Scalp Acne

Acne can appear on any part of the body including scalp. Scalp acne is an itchy, painful and exasperating condition but not noticeable unless you suffer from thinning hair. It is an inflammatory disorder of the hair follicles present in the scalp. This irritating disease which affects the scalp is not only embarrassing and difficult to hide but can also be bothersome and dangerous if left untreated. Fortunately there are several ways to tackle and deal with it.

Generally there are two types – mild and severe

The mild form of acne on the head known as scalp folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles that forms pustules on the scalp due to the accumulation of dirt and stress.

The severe form of acne on the scalp is known as Necrotica Miliaris. It is an unusual and persistent form of scalp disorder that not only affects the hair follicles but also along the hairline.

Causes and symptoms of acne on the scalp

A scalp acne breakout occurs when hair follicles become clogged with dirt and oil, hormonal irregularities, insufficient intake of nutrients, elevated levels of stress and also due to any allergic reaction of certain medications. Inadequate cleaning and accumulation of sweat on the head can also create a favorable environment for the bacteria to thrive in. Hereditary is also a factor that contributes to this skin condition. Excessive intake of caffeine and use of oily styling hair products can also trigger the condition.

The main symptom of the condition is development of small itchy pustules, cysts and pimples on the head combined with excessive hair fall. Red bumps may also be visible on the scalp. Symptoms include relentless itching and intense irritation. Wrong selection of hair care products can also aggravate the condition. Balding and scarring can occur if left untreated for a long time.

Remedies and treatment

  • One has to implement a well balanced diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Drinking plenty of water is also recommended.
  • Herbal anti-dandruff shampoo can be used to eliminate acne on the scalp.
  • Application of salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can relieve the symptoms.
